The Negroni: An Italian Classic

The Negroni is having a moment, and we’re here for it.
September 18-24th is Negroni Week. Join in on this world-wide celebration at home by following the super easy Negroni recipe below. Then, turn your playlist to O Sole Mio, and you’ll be transported to Florence, Italy in mere seconds…

History of the Negroni
Legend has it that in the late 1800s, Count Camillio Negroni asked a bartender in the Milan region of Italy to strengthen his favorite cocktail, the Americano – which is made with vermouth, Campari and soda water. The bartender, rumored to be Forsco Scarselli of Caffe Casoni, replaced the soda water with gin. And thus, the Negroni was born – forever transforming our fates as cocktail drinkers.

Make it at Home: Negroni Recipe
Easy to make at home, you’ll need:

  • Gin
  • Campari
  • Sweet vermouth

We recommend using a high quality gin here, as it really changes the profile of the cocktail. May we suggest the locally-made and biodynamic CapRock Gin? This gin is what you’d call a ‘modern gin’ as it focuses less on the traditional juniper-heavy flavors with the addition of a twelve-botanical blend of fresh and dried fruits, flowers, and spices. The bittersweet flavor of Campari is a must as well, adding “legs” to the cocktail.

  1. Fill a glass with ice
  2. Add 1 oz. of gin, campari, and sweet vermouth to a glass
  3. Stir until chilled
  4. Add orange slice or orange peel to garnish

  6. Saluti!
